Did You Know...
Homeowners who are not involved in the
planning process of their home projects
are usually the first to complain, or sue,
when the project does not turn out the way
they had imagined it to look like in their head.
Hand Carved Storage Box

This lovely hand carved box is made of Sturgeon Brand "Asp" wood.
The drawer pulls are 1 1/4" brass pulls, reminiscent of the victorian era.

The upper and lower face edging is adorned with end to end relief carved diamonds.
The triangular spacing between each diamond is also present on each drawer, in a
circular pattern, thus creating a stylized unison throughout the storage box.

The carved box body was painted with a thinned out green oil based paint.
Thinning out the paint makes it act more like a stain wash. The break down
is; 2/3 oil based paint, 1/3 mineral spirits thinner. This technique offered
not only color to the project, but it also allowed the fetching grain of the
wood to show through.

The box boarder and each drawer inset was highlighted by applying a Gold Leaf
applicant but, I sealed the first coat with clear urethane and then thinned
out the second application of Gold Leaf so as to not be a solid top coat.
This proceedure enabled the first application and the clear coat to act as a
medium to create depth against the flat finish of the thinned green oil paint.

This box was an anniversary gift for my parents in December of 2000.
The box took approximately 32 hours to design, layout, hand carve, paint,
assemble and seal. The prototypes always seems to consume more time.
